ASW Conversation: Rick McMullin on his ‘door-crasher’ special

Rick McMullin, owner of Ricky Ratchets Auto Repair in London, Ont., had one of those days just before Christmas last year. A runaway truck smashed through the front of his shop just after closing. Fortunately, no one was hurt. We gave Rick a call to find out how it all went down.

Bill C-273 proceeded through its second hour of debate Monday, showing support from all parties, though some reservations over its affect on the Competition Act are expected to send it to committee after the vote Wednesday.

The bill was debated for an hour prior to lunchtime Monday and was actually passed inadvertently, when the speaker of the house mistakenly called for a vote after the hour of debate, although the vote on the bill is scheduled for late afernoon on Wednesday, May 13.

The move surprised MPs, some of whom responded not with the customery “Yea” or “Nay” but with “Oh, Oh!”

So, in keeping with the expectation of Parliament, once the error in procedure had been brought to the attention of the speaker, the vote was rescinded. The vote on the bill will take place, as scheduled, late Wednesday afternoon where it is expected to pass.

Below is the complete, edited text as reported in Hansard, of the hourlong debate Monday, May 11.
